Article: about the Faroese metal scene

Check the Italian version of this article here

Faroe Islands: 18 islands, halfway between Iceland and Norway. 49000 inhabitants, less than half of an average quarter of Rome. Hostile climate, strong people. Maybe some of you have already heard of Tórshavn while watching a football match. Surely a wider section of our readers knows something about the islands thanks to the viking metal band Týr (from the remake of the national anthem Tú Alfagra Mitt Land on), certainly the most famous and representative band of Faroese metal scene. But is Faroese metal just made up by this band? Or is there something more than just Týr? The answer to the latter question is yes, as the metal scene made in Faroes has much more to offer than you can imagine.

In fact, despite being around twenty years old, the Faroese metal scene has already reached a high level of maturity and variety. Established in the early 90’s, as a result of the ideas coming from a group of young people without a specific musical training, but with a great passion for classic bands such as Kiss, Iron Maiden and Twisted Sister, this scene started with cover bands, which were very active also within the pop music scene. At that time one of the most representative ones was Betrayer, which focused on covering timeless popular songs from Iron Maiden, Pantera, Slayer, Metallica and Megadeth. During the following years, slowly but inexorably, more bands having their own music style were founded, such as Mold, a rock/grunge band with English lyrics, active for seven years between 1992 and 1999, during which it published two full-lengths, Oblivion, which evolved from hard rock to metal with early death metal influences or Wolfgang (formerly known as Cruiser), the first band created by Gunnar Thomsen and Heri Joensen, active until 1997.

Later in 1998, another group was formed, the one that, according to most metalheads around the world still is the Faroese band par excellence: Týr. Founded by Thomsen and Joensen, Týr have gained more and more popularity over the years, especially among fans of viking metal who could appreciate, reasonably for the first time, lyrics and themes inspired by the traditions, history and mythology of this Nordic nation (the name Týr itself is inspired by a Scandinavian god of justice). Not to mention, a touch of national Faroese pride, which is pretty common among this population. Heri Joensen, which is also the founder of another progressive metal band, Heljareyga (formed in 2009 with four other young musicians), has become over the years a point reference within this music scene, a well-known music teacher as well as a supporter of the preservation of some local traditions of these Islands, which have recently ended up at the center of an international controversy.

In the last decade, Faroese metal has quickly developed itself and many bands with an high potential and fresh ideas were founded. Among the best known, at least to the Nordic and German audience, SIC (pronounced as sick) certainly needs to be mentioned: founded in 2002 this quintet had released so far two full-length and one live album, playing an aggressive death/thrash metal heavily influenced by hardcore, choosing a musical style that resembles to Danish Hatesphere, to which SIC has been the opening act in 2009. Another Faroese band that has managed to play throughout Europe is Synarchy, a band characterized by its energetic melodic death metal style. During the last few years, more recently founded bands have stood up, such as Incurse, a notable thrash metal combo with old school Metallica influences, Earth Divide, playing non-commercial and charismatic metalcore music, which sounds way more original than the most of newly founded bands I’ve ever heard, or The Apocryphal Order, a thrash/death metal quartet which, despite having recently moved to Denmark, can still be considered as Faroese. Not to mention the case of 200, a band founded in 1997 as an alternative rock band with Faroese lyrics, which over the years has developed as the only punk/rock group of these Islands, becoming thereby a genre of its own. A risky choice, which as for now seems to be worth it.

However, within this latest wave of new groups, the name that is mostly known among the Italian public is Hamferð. In fact, since last year, this doom metal sextet has recently achieved many important goals. Founded in 2008, they became known in Europe and in Italy in the fall of 2011 while touring with Moonsorrow and Týr, surprising the audience with great opening acts act characterized by their elegant stage presence, giving off the feeling of a funeral procession and their mysterious lyrics, all sung in Faroese. As stated by their frontman Jón Hansen, this linguistic choice was inevitable, as the term Hamferð (a word that is not directly translatable, but describes sort of a visual appearance of a person, who most likely faces the inevitability of death) being a concept closely linked to the tradition of Faroe. Not surprisingly, last spring the Hamferð were announced by an international jury as the winners of the first edition of the Wacken Metal Battle Føroyar, later winning also the international finals held at WOA 2012 , gaining the opportunity to sign a contract with the famous label Nuclear Blast. Contrary to what one might have expected, during competition, held for the first time in 2012 with the support of local sponsors as Tutl, the Norðurlandahúsið í Føroyum and Ljóð og Tøkni the sense of pride that this nation feels for his musician has impressed everyone. In fact, the atmosphere during that night was absolutely quiet and in a way familiar, with all the musicians appearing more like family members, rather than as artists engaged in a no holds barred close competition.

This "familiar" and very open minded approach has been appreciated during other events as well, such as, the most important Faroese summer open air event, the G! Festival. Established in 2002 from the idea of the musician Jón Tyril, this festival has seen its metal component increasingly expanding over the years -enriched with performances not only of local artists, but also of well-known international bands such as Arch Enemy and Meshuggah-, without losing the support of the population. How many Italian festivals with a 3-day program that ranges among the most different genres, such as the G! Festival’s one, go (almost) sold out? None. But in the Faroes, it happens often because the support to the music scene is constant and deep-rooted, and the genre is often considered just as a label, a fact that allows many musicians to be members of two or three different bands at the same time because, in the end, the only important thing is making music.

The effects of this attitude, so far from all those sterile polemics which recently become common among the Italian metalheads, culminated this summer with the first page of a popular national newspaper entirely dedicated to Hamferð and their victory in Germany. All this certainly does not mean that the among the Faroese population there aren’t any detractors of metal music, as still being an area where religion and traditions matter so much. Moreover, a few months ago great was the uproar surrounding large cuts in the national art funding, which are likely to have a very negative influence on the productivity of artists. However, these artists keep on doing their best with what they have and feeling as members of a single group, rather than a competition of bands who feel threatened by the others. This is how really passionate musicians should behave, and that’s something I'd like Italians to learn, instead of always arousing bitter controversy. Controversy which, along with economical problems, have prevented events such as Wacken Metal Battle Italy to be organized since 2011.

Moreover, it should be noted that all of these bands continue to rely on an important point of reference, the Tutl Plátufelagið, founded in 1977 by Danish musician Kristian Blak. It is better described as the Faroese Music Center, rather than as a regular record label, as it publishes and supports all Faroese artists who are interested in making albums. Over the years, it has become the most important reference of the Faroese national scene and, in the last five years, has managed to sign agreements with other European labels, in order to further the impact of Faroese music and allow more artists to perform during festivals held throughout Europe.

Also thanks to this important commitment, the attention of Europe has begun to turn to this scene as a source of inspiration and new interesting musical proposals. Through the modern technologies that allow foreigners to contact all the Faroese band through social networks and purchase their products from the site of Tutl, it is now easier to get to know something more about this small nation and its music.
For next year a new challenge has already launched: the Wacken Metal Battle Føroyar
will be doubled, making it last two days instead of one and with at least 2-3 more groups playing. Awaiting 2013 edition of the Wacken Open Air, during which two Faroese groups will be playing, quite a record for this country, small but with a great potential.

Wacken 2012: Hamferð won the Wacken Metal Battle!

The Faroese doom metal band Hamferð, of whom we have already spoken about in the Wacken Metal Battle Føroyar live report, won the international finals of the Metal Battle, which took place within Wacken Open Air festival, Germany. After a compelling two-days competition, during which almost 30 bands from all around the world challenged each other in front of a jury of international level, the band from Tórshavn has brought home this excellent result thank to its strong, atmospheric and unique style and its great stage presence, giving off the feeling of a funeral procession.

Hamferd_Wacken12_winners_05

Consequently, it’s not surprising that the judges have chosen this band from the Faroe Islands to become the winners of this renowned competition. Nevertheless, after the victory, Hamferð‘s frontman, Jón Hansen, has declared that this result has been pretty unexpected:

The experience of winning the Wacken Metal Battle was odd, since we had no thoughts on whether or not we would be in the popular end of the bands at all. Yet it feels less like a "victory" in the sense of the word, and more as if a window has been opened quite wide for us to take the band further. Every band gave their best and had equal chance of getting noticed, so hopefully the other bands will enjoy some success from playing at Wacken as well. That was our only aim from the beginning, and we exceeded it, somehow!

Hamferd_Wacken12_winners_01

Great satisfaction has been also expressed by the Metal Battle Føroyar organizers who, within less than one year, have started the project, experienced successful national finals and have now seen the Faroese band winning the international finals in Germany. In this connection, one of the organizers, Fróði Tórálvsson Stenberg, has declared:

It feels incredible and surreal all at once. We started the idea of Metal Battle Føroyar back in november, and now we have our first winner, the first time we´re participating in the Wacken Metal Battle concept. I´m happy for the guys in Hamferð, such music enthusiasts and great people, I'm proud to be able to serve as platform through Metal Battle Føroyar, and help getting their music out there. Naturally I also want to thank all our sponsors, who made the trip possible.

Winning this competition will mean not only getting the chance to play again at Wacken Open Air 2013,  but, above all, getting a worldwide record deal with the German label Nuclear Blast and material prices of Marshall, Washburn, Paiste and Eagletone.

Who are the Wacken Metal Battle Føroyar winners?

Hamferð was formed with one goal: To bring slow, crushing and atmospheric music to the Faroe Islands, the home to a bleak and depressive atmosphere that can only be properly communicated through the funeral march of Doom Metal

Hamferð is a doom metal band formed in 2008 in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands.
After changing its line-up several times, in January 2010, the band joined a Faroese band competition called Sement. Since winning the competition, Hamferð have progressed and had a rapid growth.

During summer 2010 Hamferð appeared on several well known festivals in the Faroe Islands, including Summarfestivalurin and the G! Festival. Shortly after their concerts on both festivals Kerrang! critiqued their performances and handed them an impressive 4 out of 5 stars. In December 2010, they released their last EP, Vilst er síðsta fet.

In fall 2011, Hamferð have toured with Moonsorrow, Týr and Crimfall throughout Europe during the Dead Tyrants tour, but also rocked their own country and Iceland with Skálmöld during Ferðin til Heljar (The Journey till Hell) tour in summer 2011. Now it's time for them for another international live experience, Wacken Open Air 2012.

Hamferð current line-up:
Jón Hansen - vocals
John Egholm - guitar
Theodor Kapnas - guitar
Remi Johannesen - drums
Esmar Joensen - keys
Jenus í Trøðini - bass

Live report: Wacken Metal Battle Føroyar [English]

The very first edition of the Faroese Wacken Metal Battle took place in the capital city Tórshavn, at the characteristic Sjónleikarahúsið theater, crowded until sold out. On this very special occasion, 8 different bands have performed on stage, making the local audience enjoy a 6-hours non stop metalnight, quite a record for such a small country like the Faroe Islands are.

Konqueror

WMBF_Konqueror

Konqueror, first band to perform at the Metal Battle, is probably the one to have disappointed me the most during the entire evening. This very young quintet has disinterestedly performed 5 not so original thrash / death metal songs, so much so that, in their closing track Lady Hellbender, its singer David Reinert Petersen looked sick and tired of having to entertain the audience, singing and acting very unenthusiastically. More generally, despite the pressing rythms of their songs, the group appeared to be very static and unwilling to pay much attention to the public reaction, even less than they had dedicated to the Meet & Greet with the press and judges, not sending any band member to introduce themselves. Certainly it's not a coincidence if the organizers have chosen this group to be the opening band..

The Happening

WMBF_TheHappening

Everything luckly changes with the gig of The Happening, a recently formed band which already knows what it's about. These four guys from Søldarfjørður performed a classic rock'n'roll, very catchy and absorbing, which allowed them to pass on to the audience all their energy and enthusiasm, despite some minor technical problem occurred during the performance. Thank to their dynamic frontman Anselm Højgaard, The Happening performed all the five tracks at their best, being able to involve the crowded audience, fastly growing under our very eyes. Very good job for a budding band.

Synarchy

WMBF_Synarchy

As soon as a band like Synarchy went onstage, it has been immediately clear that we were in front of one of the potential winners of the competition. This Faroese group demonstrated maturity and a great ability to hold the stage for the entire duration of their performance, thanks to their long live experience (gained, for example, while touring Europe with Musica Diablo), which allowed it to do an excellent job despite not having their current official live keyboardist on stage, who had chosen to focus only on the performance with Hamferð. During the gig Synarchy gave a good account of themselves to the beat of an original melodic death metal, with an unexpected modern touch, that made the audience go mad since the very beginning of Tear Up the World. A band with a significant potential, which we will probably see again soon on stage around Europe.

Hamferð

WMBF_Hamferd

Despite having to deal with a too short set for a doom metal band, Hamferð (already known to the European public for opening to Moonsorrow and Týr gigs during their last European tour) actually managed to convince everyone attending the Metal Battle about its value. The sextet has in fact proved its great strength and maturity, taking care of every detail during the entire gig and elegantly giving off the feeling of a funeral procession, which started already with the slow and gradual entry of each member on stage, while a long, dark and brand new intro was playing in background. Led by the charismatic frontman Jón Hansen, Hamferð performed well during a concert substantially without neither faults or pauses and eventually opting for an unexpected closing track, Opið Hav (from their first demo, Doomo), succeeding in entertain the enthusiastic audience.

The Apocryphal Order

WMBF_TAO

The Apocryphal Order are probably the band that has taken the less advantage from the golden opportunity of playing at this Metal Battle, because soon after the opening track Beyond The Depraved Scope Of Salvation had started, the group had to stop playing because of a problem with the drummer's laptop, which apparently decided to shut down at the very beginning of the performance, not letting the musician keep on doing his work and making the whole band losing precious time. Apart from this technical problem, The Apocryphal Order actually managed to perform and entertain the audience with a progressive death / thrash metal, not particulary original, but still good for a band formed just in 2010 and without the necessary live experience. It's anyway still needed to attend a less troublesome gig to judge TAO more completely.

Setlist
Beyond The Depraved Scope Of Salvation
The Gates Of Deceit

Earth Divide

WMBF_EarthDivide

When it has been announced that Earth Divide, a recently formed progressive metalcore band, had entered the Metal Battle competition, I admit I thought that they would have had little to say in a basically all metal night. This quintet has instead proved I was wrong, being able to bring on stage a tough, non commercial metalcore, capable to drag the audience into its rythms, thanks in particular to the charismatic and powerful voice of its frontman, Johan Fríðrikur Sanderson. It has to be mentioned that most the band members are not newbies, but musicians having long experience into the metal scene, consequently having all the means to create and perform live four tracks which sounded original, thank above all to the great work of the two guitarists. A very interesting experiment that promises well for the future.

Incurse

WMBF_Incurse

If you are looking for a Metallica-style thrash metal band, here is the group for you. Incurse are indeed a band which is able to perform a very energetic old school thrash metal, with no gimmicks, no frills or modernisms, that immediately sends the audience into raptures. The five tracks presented on this occasion, all strongly structured and very incisive, have made the audience travel back in time, to a classical and stinging past we are all missing. Creating new old school sounding songs without any progressive touch and almost perfectly performing them live is certainly not easy, but Incurse can do it very well, above all on stage. That's why a so short gig left everyone with a bitter taste in their mouth: you can't really get enough of groups like this.

Setlist
Backlash
Forcing you to Die
Jarhead
Frostbound

SIC

WMBF_SIC

The last band to perform on this occasion has been SIC (pronounced as 'sick'), a quintet that immediately became one of the top 3 favorites for the final victory. The band, which has a long experience of live concerts all around Europe, has been able to create the most energetic and powerful performance of this very special evening, thank above all to the great charge of the singer Mikkjal Hansen, the only frontman to talk to the public and judges in English as well as in Faroese. SIC's tracks tare an overdose of brutal and straightforward thrash metal, with a smart hardcore touch, that takes the audience breath away until the closing song Fighters they Bleed has ended. A top mark performance. If they're touring next to your place, don't miss them, they're totally worth it.

At the end of this successful event the jury, composed by 4 foreigner experts and a Faroese judge, announced the winner of this Battle, which will perform at the WOA 2012, challenging all the other winners from the various Wacken Metal Battles around the world. This once in a lifetime chance has been given to the doom metal sextet Hamferð, certainly one of the favourites since the competition had started.
However, what impressed me the most during this metalnight has been the general sense of pride that this nation has for its bands (surprisigly having a very high quality in general) and musicians, who looked more as members of the same family, rather than as artists engaged in a no holds barred close competition. A great example of how much music can be powerful.

Live report: Wacken Metal Battle Føroyar [Italiano]

The Happening

WMBF_TheHappening

The Apocryphal Order

WMBF_TAO
